Sands of Chaos

Another Turn-Based RPG? Yay?

I’ve resisted making an RPG. I think part of it is due to this fear I had/have of falling short. That’s a bad excuse, and I finally realized that. I instinctively take a story first approach to game design. It has its advantages and disadvantages. The biggest advantage, in my opinion, is negated if I don’t work in a genre where the story contributes significantly to the overall experience. I’d made an infinite runner for mobile, and I prioritized story there too. Probably not the best use of development time 🤦‍♂️.

So that is one big reason, I, Ali, should be making RPGs.

RPGs are the games I’ve always been drawn to and enjoyed playing the most. I got the Playstation 2 over the Xbox, because Final Fantasy X. One of my all time favorite games is Golden Sun. I own and have played Chrono Trigger on multiple platforms 😮.

I want to bring elements that I enjoyed in those games into a game of my own. I want it to feel familiar, yet fresh. I have limited resources, and I have little experience in the field of game design. Should be a fun ride 😀!

How will it feel different?

One of the core gameplay mechanics in Sands of Chaos is going to be this ability that the player will have to jump back and forth in time during combat. I’m designing a number of unique monsters, enemies, events that will make this mechanic feel rewarding.

This might end up being a rogue-lite (because it fits well with the story), so there will be significant balancing and design work around that as well.

I’ll be sharing progress updates here, regularly.

In the meanwhile, I’ll leave you with an idle gif of Azrae in the pixel art style that she and other characters will be presented in the game!
