The Need to Create

I’ve been enjoying Shahid Kamal Ahmad (@shahidkamal) / Twitter’s Youtube videos where he documents his journey as he set out to create a new game. What the game is, Shahid doesn’t yet know. It’s encouraging. It’s inspiring. It makes me realize that the process of creating is by its very nature, torturous. It doesn’t matter if you’ve done amazing stuff before. It happens with every new thing that you try to create.

I’ve been working on various Into the Dungeons projects - world building, video game(s), board game, music, story/comic, for the last couple of years now. Each project is at different stages of completion. The video game has constantly been morphing from one prototype to another. All the time, my brain has provided me with countless gems, such as - Is this the right one? Will anyone want to play it? Maybe I should focus on a making a small game so I can get something out there quickly! This sucks, no one will play it. Etc.

I’ve finally landed on something that I will finish. I don’t know when, but I know that I will. It’s an RPG. I hesitated making an RPG, even though it is the genre I’ve loved the most. An RPG would take too long. It would be a lot of work. So many different excuses.

There is one key step that I’m taking to ensure I finish this game that I’ve started.

  • Do something, no matter how small, every day. Document it.

At the end of the day, I have a need to tell stories. Why? I don’t exactly know. It doesn’t matter how many, if any, people experience it. What matters is that the story is out there, ready and waiting for those who were meant to find it.
